Episode Summary

Introduction

"Uncertainty is why the world needs leaders."

When you are uncertain about the future and simply cannot know what comes next, how are you to lead in a way that conveys confidence? How do you handle this tension?

5 Principles for Leading Through Uncertainty

1. Remind people that certainty never existed - James 4:13-17 reminds us that being assured about tomorrow is simply impossible. We simply cannot know for sure about what will occur. COVID-19 didn't change this reality. The future only feels more uncertain. All of history functions this way. Remember that not knowing the future doesn't make you a bad leader. Tragedy can occur at any time and we are fragile. However, we simply must seek to be faithful with what we do know. Shepherd people with this reminder.

2. Don't over-promise or over-doom - We need to be careful with our words and understand that, as leaders, what we say can seriously impact the way people respond. Remember that fear travels fast. Instead of speaking with certainty about future promises or future warnings, simply speak from what you are assured of. Go with what you know. If you do not know what is going to happen, choose words that are compassionate, cautious, and simultaneously refuse to stir up fear or apathy.

3. Don't beat yourself up - Avoid self-talk that condemns yourself for feeling fear or insecurity. It is okay not to know what to do next. We are living in a time where almost everyone is struggling in the exact same way. This should settle us. Understand how you typically react to uncertainty and safe-guard against unhealthy reactions. Resist the urge to compare yourself to others. You are serving the Lord and he knows where you need help.

4. Telegraph how you're thinking about the uncertainty - When you are not sure what to do, do not be lazy. Seek to be clear even in the midst of uncertainty. Communicate what it is that you do and do not know. Note that this is different than telegraphing exactly what you are planning for the next six months. Simply articulate some of the thought behind your own ideas. Before you make decisions, invite people into the tension of not knowing for sure. Give a forum for people to ask questions. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know" or "This could go a number of ways."

5. Remind people the end of the story - The unique advantage of being a Christian leader is that you know the end of the story. We can be confident that no matter our current events or the uncertainty ahead, Jesus will return to fully establish his Kingdom. We are assured that one day, everything will be made right. We get to spend eternity with our God. This is confidence is a privilege and something we need to share often with others.
