On this episode of the Church Leadership Podcast, Adam and John are in the studio to discuss the 8 things they wish they knew when they were younger and what they younger leaders to keep in mind.

Episode Summary

8 Things Older Leaders Want You to Know

  1. It all connects – Younger leaders often wonder if their effort and investment today will pay off in the future. Remember there are no wasted relationships or moments in God’s economy. Looking back on a life of ministry will reveal that God uses all of it.
  2. There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom – Just because you may have the facts, doesn’t mean you know how to apply it. Remember the need to seek out the wisdom earned from experience.
  3. Your energy is a gift – If you are a young leader, your zeal and enthusiasm can be a source of energy and joy for older leaders. Don’t forget that ministry can be discouraging and your fervor and passion rubs off on those around you.
  4. You are digging your well – You are currently digging the well that you will draw from for the rest of your life. Your experience, spiritual development, and growth today are all going to be things that you use in the future. Keep track of these things, keep a journal, and start formulating ideas now.
  5. Old people want to help – Older leaders aren’t trying to keep you down or discourage you. If they are cautioning you to move slowly or do something differently, it may be because they care for you and don’t want you to make the wrong decisions. Instead, seek to be grateful and appreciative for the investment of older leaders. Ask them questions.
  6. Show you are all in – Older leaders can sometimes feel skeptical that younger leaders are truly invested in the mission. Remember that they want that same energy and creativity you utilize in your personal passions to be used for the mission as well.
  7. Learn to take a punch – Put in work to cultivate emotional resiliency. There are going to be times in ministry and life where you grow discouraged, feel defeated, or are told “no” and your temptation will be to give up. Instead, fight against fear and get back in the ring.
  8. Your life is not your own – The modern quest for self-actualization, personal achievement, and our own glory is ultimately a false one and will leave us empty. We are to build God’s kingdom and seek his glory rather than our own.
