Through real-world ministry experience and in-depth biblical instruction, the Watermark Institute equips current and future church leaders to serve the body of Christ today and long into the future.

What is the Watermark institute?
The Watermark Institute is a hands-on ministry training program that focuses on helping participants fall more in love with Jesus. Participants are trained in theology, doctrine, and apologetics while learning the Bible cover-to-cover (and learning how to teach it to others). Participants graduate from the program ready to make a lifelong impact for the Kingdom of God.
Discipleship Program Overview
Christ works through the Watermark Institute to make lifelong impacts in the lives of the participants, no matter what path their future career takes them.
We focus not only on head knowledge, but on the condition of your heart, the work of your hands, and the overall health of the church.
You will be trained in theology, doctrine, and apologetics while learning the Bible cover-to-cover (and learning how to teach it to others).
You will take on meaningful responsibility within your ministry alongside church leaders who have been doing it for years. The goal is to help you deploy your gifts and get real ministry experience.
We want you to fall more in love with Jesus and His people. Experience what authentic Christ-centered community is like and gain a healthy vision for what the local church can and should be.
Because it is an investment in the church, we provide the Institute at no cost to you, and even help cover some of your living expenses during the 10-month program.
Who is this for?
The Watermark Institute is for anyone who wants to grow in their walk with Christ and explore whether God may be calling them into full-time ministry. It is designed to help participants grow spiritually, theologically, and vocationally as they gain real-world ministry experience.

"I came into the Watermark Institute worn out and close to giving up on the church. God used my year in the Institute to instruct my head in the truths of Christ, refresh my heart for a greater love of Christ, and re-energize my hands for service to Christ. I now have a greater love for Christ than ever before and that has led to a greater impact for Christ."
Derek Matthews
There is no better way that I could have spent a year. I gained a deeper love for God, a greater knowledge of His Word, and new passion to pass it on.
Kirby Wagner
The Institute was the greatest thing I have ever done to prepare me for the ministry I am in now! The biblical and theological training I received equipped me to faithfully and correctly handle the word of God, and I fell in love with what God intends to do through the local church.

FAQs
The Fellowship is designed for proven leaders who already have a few years of work experience (typically people who are 25+ years old). If you are faithfully leading others in ministry as a lay leader and feel called to make it your vocation—or if you are already in vocational ministry but want to gain more training and experience—the Fellowship may be right for you.
The Residency is for recent college graduates or those who are college aged with a few years of experience. It is for those who are already leading in ministry, are strongly considering vocational ministry, and are looking to take the next step in training and experience.
To begin the process, please complete the Institute application in the link. Applications are open November 1 through February 1 and the Institute begins the following August.
Applications are open from November 1st to February 1st, and the Institute begins the following August. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so applicants are encouraged to apply early as spots may be filled before the deadline.
It varies depending on the year. In a typical year, we receive hundreds of applications and accept between 40-50 people into the Institute.
Each Watermark Institute class meets for about 10 months, from August through May.
Yes. The Watermark Institute is an in-person program located in Dallas, TX.
If you are single, we will provide an apartment for you to live in with other Institute participants. If you are married, a stipend will be provided based on your Institute track (Resident or Fellow).
$0. We see the Institute as an investment into the future of churches around the world and a way that we can serve the overall body of Christ.
Fellows are provided with housing (or a housing allowance) and a monthly stipend. They are also able to work part-time, either within or outside of the church. Residents are provided with housing (or a housing allowance on a case by case basis). They are encouraged to work part-time to cover other living expenses. We strongly advise you not to apply if you have a considerable amount of student or consumer debt.
We partner with Dallas Theological Seminary, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for those who complete the Watermark Institute in good standing. Credit varies based on the Seminary you choose to attend.
Institute participants are seen as valuable members of the Watermark Community Church staff and are treated as such. All Residents and Fellows are treated as a part of our staff, and jump into serving with meaningful responsibility on their ministry teams immediately.
One of the goals of the Institute is to help Fellows and Residents figure out their best next step. Many go directly into full time ministry, some attend seminary and others may decide to pursue a different vocation.
Outside of class time, studying, and 10 ministry hours each week, Residents can work part-time. We strongly encourage Residents to work no more than 12 hours a week.
Because of the high time commitment of both ministry hours and class work in the Fellowship, participants are not able to work full-time, or take any additional schooling (including seminary) during the 10-month program. In light of this, Watermark provides Fellows with housing (or a housing allowance on a case by case basis) and a monthly stipend to help cover other living expenses. If part time work is necessary, we encourage Fellows to work no more than 9 additional hours of part-time work.

We keep asking why the next generation is leaving the Church, but Grant Skeldon thinks we’re asking the wrong question. Instead, we should be asking, how are we discipling the next generation? In this episode of the Church Leadership Podcast, recorded live at the 2025 Church Leaders Conference, Grant calls us to stop handwringing over what is wrong and to start identifying what is working. He explores key discipleship moments for raising up the next generation leaders and what you can do to help develop more young leaders in the church.
PodcastHow to Invest in Young Leaders
In this follow-up episode to "7 Ways to Develop Young Leaders,” John McGee sits down with Emma Dotter, Director of Join The Journey, and Kylen Perry, Executive Director of The Porch, to unpack practical ways to develop young leaders. In this conversation, Emma and Kylen reflect on pivotal moments from their own leadership journeys and offer wisdom for both young adults navigating their calling and for veteran leaders looking to invest well into the next generation.
